If you make your own, you can just draw three circles on a page and then 2-5 triangles on a page, and ask the child to match each circle with a triangle by drawing a line from shape to shape. Vary the shapes and the amounts. Sometimes the amounts should be equal, sometimes not.
Play with marbles or blocks or similar objects. You take some objects, and ask the child to take for himself as many as you have AND ONE more. Then it’s the child’s turn to take some, and you need to take the same amount plus one more. Reverse the game later to do ONE LESS.
You’ve chosen one small group of facts to concentrate on. Now, it’s time to teach your child to visualize numbers and use an efficient strategy to find the answers.
You know your child best, but most children 6 and up are developmentally ready to master the facts. It’s fine to work on the basics of addition with a younger child, but don’t expect full mastery until your child is a little more mature.
Independent research proves that higher-level math is more difficult to learn when children have not mastered their Math Facts. This research proves the need and importance for our children to master their Math Facts. A few quotes from the experts:
You can find lots of different kinds of basic kindergarten math workbooks at Amazon. You don’t need anything too fancy to practice these concepts, so workbooks from many different publishers can work equally well.
So, have your child focus on just that specific set of facts for several days. For example, if you’ve taught her the +9 strategy above, have her practice just the +9 facts for a few days.
